India and Italy Upgrade Ties During PM Modi’s Visit
India and Italy elevated bilateral engagement during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit, with cooperation across trade, defence, innovation and culture.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Italy from May 19 to 20, 2026, as part of a five-nation tour. India and Italy reviewed cooperation under the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-2029 and announced steps to deepen bilateral ties. Key outcomes included a Special Strategic Partnership, a Foreign Ministerial-level review mechanism, a defence industrial roadmap and a bilateral trade target of EUR 20 billion by 2029. Both sides also signed MoUs in areas such as critical minerals, agriculture, maritime transport, Ayurveda, climate research and higher education.
