New Worm-Eating Snake Species Discovered in Mizoram
Researchers discovered a new non-venomous worm-eating snake species, Trachischium lalremsangai, in Mizoram and Myanmar.
A new worm-eating snake species named Trachischium lalremsangai was discovered in forest regions of Mizoram and Myanmar during biodiversity surveys. The species has been named after Professor Hmar Tlawmte Lalremsanga of Mizoram University for his contributions to herpetology. The discovery was documented in the international journal Herpetozoa. The snake is small, non-venomous and semi-fossorial, meaning it lives partly underground in loose soil, leaf litter and forest debris. It marks the 11th recognised species of the Trachischium genus found in Northeast India and the Himalayan region.
🎯 Exam Relevance: Useful for UPSC Environment, Biodiversity, Northeast India, State PSC, SSC and ecology-related questions.
