MBBS Seats Rise to 1.29 Lakh

The Health Ministry informed Lok Sabha that MBBS seats increased to 1,28,976 and PG medical seats rose to 86,360 by AY 2025-26.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare informed Lok Sabha that MBBS seats increased from 1,09,115 in AY 2023-24 to 1,28,976 in AY 2025-26. PG medical seats rose from 31,185 in AY 2023-24 to 86,360 in AY 2025-26. The ministry also stated that India had over 15.35 lakh registered allopathic medical practitioners and 7.51 lakh registered AYUSH practitioners. Assuming 80 percent availability of registered practitioners, the doctor-population ratio was estimated at 1:778. The data is significant for health infrastructure and human resource planning in India.
