Indian Navy to commission Project 17A frigate Mahendragiri

The Indian Navy announced that Mahendragiri, the sixth Project 17A indigenous stealth frigate, will be commissioned at Visakhapatnam on 11 July 2026. The warship reflects India’s growing indigenous shipbuilding capability.

Mahendragiri has been designed in-house by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, Mumbai. It is part of Project 17A, which represents an advanced line of stealth frigates for the Navy. The platform is important from the perspective of self-reliance, naval modernisation and maritime security. Such developments are frequently relevant for questions on indigenous defence production and major naval projects.
