IMD reports depression over northwest Bay of Bengal
The India Meteorological Department reported that a depression formed over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining North Odisha–West Bengal coasts on 05 July 2026. It warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in several regions and advised fishermen not to venture into affected sea areas.
IMD said the system was likely to move west-northwestwards and cross the North Odisha coast between Chandbali and Digha close to Balasore within the next 24 hours. The bulletin forecast very heavy rainfall over Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan and Goa, among other areas, and flagged rough to very rough sea conditions over parts of the Bay of Bengal. This is highly relevant for exams because monsoon systems, low-pressure developments, cyclone terminology and IMD advisories are frequent current affairs themes.
