Government Bans 16 Fixed Dose Combinations
The Union Health Ministry prohibited the manufacture, sale and distribution of 16 Fixed Dose Combinations for human use.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare issued notifications under Section 26A of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. The decision followed Supreme Court directions for a review of Fixed Dose Combinations available in India. The Drugs Technical Advisory Board constituted an Expert Committee to examine irrational combinations and their possible health risks. The banned combinations include certain dermatological preparations, analgesic and antispasmodic medicines, and antibiotic-based formulations.
