Consumer Affairs amends Legal Metrology rules for heavy weighing instruments

The Department of Consumer Affairs amended the Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011 for verification of high-capacity weighing instruments. The change reduces compliance burden and verification costs by introducing a scientific repeatability-based method.

The amendment is aimed at easing verification requirements for high-capacity weighing instruments used in industries and logistics operations. Earlier verification required a large quantity of standard weights, which increased operational burden and cost. The new repeatability-based scientific method is intended to maintain accuracy while making the process more efficient. The move is important as it combines consumer protection with Ease of Doing Business reforms.
